چکیده

Croatian sounds /ɲ/ and /ʎ/ are traditionally classified as palatal, but the lack of instrumental articulatory data causes uncertainties about their true articulatory characteristics. Since it was recently proposed that two groups of sounds could be identified within the group traditionally labelled as “palatal” in the International Phonetic Alphabet (i.e. alveolopalatal and palatal), it was our aim to investigate articulatory characteristics of /ɲ/ and /ʎ/ and see whether these two sounds have the characteristics of alveolopalatal, palatal or palatalized sounds. For this purpose we used electropalatographic data from six native speakers of Croatian. The results showed that there was no evidence of a purely palatal production of these sounds and that they were predominantly produced as alveolopalatals. The analysis also showed that /ʎ/ was more fronted and more variable than /ɲ/. There were significant inter-speaker differences in all variables.

Differences in Base of Articulation for Consonants among Catalan Dialects

Electropalatographic data for several front lingual consonants, i.e., the dental /t/, the alveolars /n, l, s, r/ and the alveolopalatals /t∫, ∫, ʎ, ɲ/, show differences in constriction anteriority among Catalan dialects varying in the progression Valencian > Eastern, with the Majorcan dialect occupying an intermediate position. These differences do not conform to speaker- dependent differences ...

An investigation of lingual coarticulation resistance using ultrasound

Introduction This paper uses ultrasound data in order to explore the extent to which lingual coarticulatory resistance for front lingual consonants and vowels in VCV sequences increases with the place and manner of articulation requirements involved in their production. Coarticulatory resistance for a given consonant or vowel is a measure of its degree of articulatory variability as a function ...

Articulatory reduction and coarticulation in Catalan three-consonant sequences.

Electropalatographic and acoustic data on Catalan /Ck#C/ sequences where # is a word boundary and /k/ is preceded by /l, s, r/ and followed by /b, m, d, l, n, z, r, ʎ/ were collected in order to test the hypothesis that the velar stop is most prone to be reduced and deleted next to consonants involving high articulatory and aerodynamic demands. Analysis results reveal the absence of a velar sto...

Perception of Italian liquids by Japanese listeners: comparisons to Spanish liquids

The present research tests Japanese listeners’ perception of Italian liquids under the framework of the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM), a model of non-native speech perception. The study examines the discrimination and the identification of Italian liquids (/l/, /r/, /ll/, /rr/ and /ʎ/), while comparing the results with those of replicated perception experiments of Spanish liquids (/l/, /ɾ...

Estimating electropalatographic patterns from the speech signal

Electropalatography is a well established technique for recording information on the patterns of contact between the tongue and the hard palate during speech, leading to a stream of binary vectors representing contacts or non-contacts between the tongue and certain positions on the hard palate. A data-driven approach to mapping the speech signal onto electropalatographic information is presente...
